The word on the street today is ACCOUNTABILITY. Accountability comes from the root word accountable which Webster defines as "subject to the obligation to report, explain, or justify something; responsible; answerable." If you're trying to lose weight the most important tool in your toolbox is having someone or something you're held accountable to.
If you have ever done a diet plan such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig there is a system in place that holds you accountable. Whether it's an online program where you count calories, a group meeting where you weigh in weekly or a friend, coach or family member, most successful weight loss programs ask that you answer to somebody or something. I have trained with a trainer twice in my life. The first time I was getting in shape for my wedding, I didn't want extra waves when I waved my arm. My aunt's husband who had received his personal training certification offered to help me get in shape. For four months I met with him three times a week. You know what? It paid off. I didn't miss training with him once because I knew he was waiting for me. The same thing happened during the Challenge. I missed one training session with my coach, Emilie, b/c my son, Buggie, threw up all over my kitchen floor. I also faithfully wrote down what I ate because I had to turn my food journal into Emilie every time I worked out with her.
Now, I hate food journaling. It's part of the reason why I didn't really like Weight Watchers. I don't like taking the time to stop and write down everything I've had to eat. That being said, I have to admit that when I am held accountable to someone else and when I'm writing it down I lose weight. I haven't touched my food journal since the beginning of December. Now, I didn't gain weight over the holidays, however, I didn't lose weight either. With the amount that I was working out I could have lost weight if I had been watching what I was eating. The problem I have now is that I don't have someone to hold me accountable. I don't have someone to turn my food journal in.
That was yesterday and this is today. I do have someone now to turn my food journal into and she's the kind of person who will pester me until it happens. Accountability, it's a powerful thing for your success. You can do it walking alongside of someone or you can try it on your own, it's your choice, but it really is a critical part of your journey towards a healthier life.
Who holds you accountable? Are you using online programs or apps? Or do you have a person or group to help you?

I definitely need to have an accountability partner. My husband would do it for me, but most of the time it is hard for it to be someone you live with. I should just suck it up and do it though. Thanks for the motivation!
ReplyDeleteI'm not trying to lose weight, but I am trying to get in shape. My helps helps keep me accountable.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I am a realtor at Keller Williams and one of the big things we talk about at our meetings is having an accountability partner for our job, life, any goals we have. It makes a huge difference. It's easier to make those phone calls when somebody else will see my worksheet with my successes or failures on it.
